United Prayer Movement Driven by his passion for prayer, God led Dr. David L. Gray to share the vision of thousands of congregations united in prayer for souls, for the young, for the confused, for the community, for the nation, for revival, and for greater Christian devotion to God. In response to such a call, many congregations (interracial and inter-denominational) have formed a cohesive body dedicated to ushering in a mighty move of God. In this regard, these prayer-minded churches and pastors have made pilgrimages to the Holy Land, to walk in the footsteps of the Savior and to develop lives of discipleship. Intercessory Prayer In recognition of the high premium we place on prayer, we have a multi-facet prayer ministry. We have persons who share fervent prayers with believers and the un-saved, in seeking to teach the principles of reliance upon the power, anointing and guidance of our Heavenly Father. Additionally, we show Christian films dedicated to encouragement of the faith. In many cases, revival has broken out throughout the world because of the prayer posture of sincere, faithful prayer warriors. We know the value of II Chronicles 7:14. Resurrection Crusade As the Resurrection Day worship always brings forth a major crowd, for 20 years this congregation has launched a major "Crusade for Christ" emphasizing decisions for the Lord Jesus. The Reardon Center is the convention center complex for downtown Kansas City, Kansas. It accommodates several thousand, providing more than adequate space for such a major thrust for the lost. For many years the crowd on Resurrection Day necessitated using a larger facility. Resurrection Day 2002 brought an end to the use of the larger facility for just one service and the beginning of two morning worship services, 7:30 am and 10:45 am at the Pleasant Baptist Church site. We welcome all! Community Theatre Another vision of our late, esteemed pastor, Dr. David L. Gray, this effort was launched in 1980, as an outreach development for the community, showing Christian plays, movies, and musicals. Pastoral Support Affirming the Pastor of the Church as a spiritual gift, Ephesians 4, from God to this body, we celebrate his life and work in Jesus Christ. We note that his tasks deserve our respect and support (I Thessalonians 5:12), and seek to meet his personal and material needs, so as to give him absolute freedom to preach, teach, pray, share God's vision, counsel, and provide care for the souls of all members of this fellowship. These godly, Spirit-filled, mature, and prayerful persons periodically remind the congregation of the Pastor's birthday, significant achievements in ministry, and seek ways to bless the one who cares for the Lord's flock. Worship The chief end of man, redeemed by the blood of our Savior Jesus Christ, is to praise, honor, extol, bless and lift up the name of our Creator and Sustainer. We accomplish this by regular times of congregational worship, each Lord's day at 7:30am, 10:45am and 7:00pm, in spirit and in truth, affirming the holy, unique, awesome and glorious name of the Lord. Deacons Christian men who evidence a new Christian experience in Christ, who possess spiritual maturity, wisdom, character, and willingness to serve God, the Pastor, and the Church family, in meeting tangible needs in the body of Christ. These men visit the sick, pray for the believers, share the Lord's supper, assist in baptism, and serve with the Pastor, seeking to advance God's kingdom. God qualifies them by His righteous standards (I Timothy 3:8-13). Food Program This church family seeks to be "holistic" in its approach to ministry; thus, we seek to feed both the soul and the body. Accordingly, we have a full pantry of canned and dry foods, along with meats and vegetables, whereby we give away baskets of food for needy families, particularly during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Several churches in the area assist us in a mammoth food giveaway for the community. During the holidays, we feed at least 500 families. Our aim is to stand with families during tough times, sharing out of our resources to meet tangible needs, always mindful of Christ's admonition to help the less fortunate (Matthew 25:40). Preaching We endorse the biblical inquiry, "How shall they hear without a preacher?" (Romans 10:14) as key to the impact of the gospel message about the Lord Jesus Christ. Characteristically, then, the Pastor will share a message from the Word, preached in an expository fashion, centered in Christ, under the anointing of the Holy Spirit, with application principles for daily life. Afterward, he calls for a decision for Christ. Finance Persons with a deep love for Jesus Christ, spiritual insight, prayerfulness, acceptance of the Word as guide, committed to tithing, with impeccable character and integrity, serve the Lord by counting and recording the weekly tithes and offering brought forth by all congregants. They make a report to the Pastor to aid in the administrative function. They serve as good stewards of all the church's financial resource (II Corinthians 8:18-22). Ushers Wonderful, Christian, godly, patient and loving persons who serve the master and the saints by seeking to meet the worship needs all of who come into the church sanctuary. They pass out bulletins, fans, hymnals, seat our guests, assist in emergencies and seek to facilitate the maximum benefit for all who seek to hear and celebrate the saving truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Counselors As persons come forth during the invitation period for salvation, for reinstatement, to transfer from another church fellowship, for healing, for deliverance, for a praise report, we seek to pair such persons with spiritual mature, loving, faithful, Bible-centered, Holy Spirit-led counselors. Our counselors share truths from the Word relative to: the security of the saved; developing a prayer life; how to study the Bible; obedience; how to fight Satan and win; Christian stewardship; in tithing, worship attendance, the believers status in Christ and other key concepts in for growth in Christian discipleship. Music Ministry The intentional means of leading the praise and worship function of the congregation in all worship experience, by persons who possess Christian faith, maturity, and the in-dwelling of the Holy Spirit. Utilizing their spiritual gifts of song, such a ministry entails all of our musical entities: Children; Teen; Yahwah 3 ; Combined; Pleasant Tones; Praise Dancers and Gospel Band. We celebrate the Lord and communicate saving truth about Jesus Christ by way of praise; contemporary gospel; hymns; anthems; spirituals; and interpretive dance. Church Fellowship As the Holy Spirit dictates, we share with sister congregations for special worship celebrations, knowing that "fellowship" is an integral part of our unity in the wide body of Christ. We are keenly aware of Jesus' admonition, "that they may be one" (John 17). Accordingly, although appreciative of our Baptist heritage, we worship with all denominations who share our love for Jesus Christ. As part of the evangelic mission left for all believers by the Lord Jesus Christ (Matthew 28:18-20), we seek to take the gospel to the homes of the unsaved, the un-reached, the un-churched and the un-concerned in order that they may hear of salvation. Over the years, this method of going to the lost and the wayward has resulted in literally thousands coming to Christ for salvation and thousands more being restored to faithfulness in the local congregation. Dedicated, godly, mature faithful Christian women, often the wives of Deacons, known for love of Christ, commitment to their families and devotion to the Lord, the Pastor and the church fellowship. They serve the Master and the saints in many tangible acts; prayer, preparing the Lord's supper, assisting in baptism, counseling with younger married women, and more. They have godly heritage. Much like our focus for television, our radio ministry seeks to convey the love of God for humanity, through the sacrificial death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. For over 37 years, this church has taken to the airways with the message of hope, faith, salvation, healing, deliverance, joy and peace with the Creator, as we come in the name of the Son. Locally, the radio broadcast is heard on Sundays at 9:00 AM on station KPRT 1590AM. Our mid-week family gathering is exciting! Each Wednesday evening, approximately 200 gather for prayer and study of the Word of God. In actuality, this is PGBC at her best! During the prayer time, we humble ourselves to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, all done "In the name of Jesus". After the sharing of prayer concerns, we move forth into a time of teaching from the Word. Led by the pastor, we have completed a printed study of "Discovering and Developing Your Spiritual Gifts for Christian Ministry". This series has served to enlighten and encourage believers, helping them to appreciate their gifts as essential "equipment" for accomplishment of the divine will. A further study, "The Authority of the Word" serves to underscore the critical importance of God's Word as the fundamental basis for all Christian faith, belief and practice. Properly interpreted and augmented by the illumination of the Holy Spirit, the Word will guide believers into healthy and productive lives. Owing to a vibrant, growing church fellowship numbering nearly 1,000 members, spread over the greater Kansas City metropolitan area, we seek to aid fellowship, foster spiritual gifts, know the spiritual status of all congregants, and provide for the needs of all members. We accomplish these aims by dividing the membership among the 12 calendar months, each according to his/her birth month. Once a month, the members of that birth month fellowship lead the evening worship, sharing their spiritual gifts from God, thereby edifying the body of Christ. Targeting those in the church family below the age of 12 years, we seek to provide an alternative venue for worship of God. Commensurate with spiritual and emotional level, we share the love of God in Christ Jesus, using godly, dedicated, patient leaders. As part of our total education thrust, in our declared war on "biblical ignorance," we endeavor to teach, train and equip every member of this fellowship with spiritual principles for dynamic, productive, victorious life in a daily walk with the Lord Jesus Christ. From toddlers to adults, we have age-appropriate classes designed to make the Bible come alive with spiritual, emotional, and practical truth for abundant living. Indeed, we seek to "study to show ourselves proved unto God" able to handle accurately and effectively the Word of truth (II Timothy 2:15). Designed as a dynamic means of demonstrating "Victory in Jesus," this outreach has sought to reach the greater Kansas City metropolitan area with a redemptive message. For over 17 years, our television ministry has aided the lost, encouraged the saved, and served to dissimilate the truth of the Scriptures to the widest possible audience. Locally, each Sunday at 6:00am, on the CBS affiliate, KCTV Channel 5, we take to the air with a Word from the Master. Recognizing that Christ calls believers in different states, we celebrate healthy, joyous, dynamic and progressive Singles in the body of Christ. This ministry stands as an antidote to loneliness, despair, and frustration with one's marital status. Participants find "wholeness" in their relationship with Christ and one another, for lives of spiritual triumph. Some of the manifestations of this dynamic ministry are: Spiritual encouragement sessions, Singles Conferences, Community outreach projects, Health and fitness awareness, and more. During the month of January, the adult men of our fellowship direct our worship and witness to the Lordship of Jesus Christ in a variety of activities. These men challenge one another, by the power of the Spirit of God, to live as godly fathers, husbands, and men. During the month of November, the adult women of our fellowship prayerfully serve as a reflection of God's love, providing leadership in worship, prayer, testimonies, and in other facets of ministry. All women are encouraged and compelled to strive for excellence in Christ as godly mothers, wives, and women. "Praise, Prayer & Preaching" Bowl Each New Year's Day, we begin the year in praise of God, with a day dedicated to celebration of the God of our faith, with prayers for His ultimate guidance, and hearing the Word of God proclaimed by some of the finest preachers in the Kansas City metropolitan area. In light of the many who are incarcerated from the African American community, we serve as a caring family. By visits to prisoners, letters and phone calls to inmates, Bible studies, and counseling for the paroled, we flesh out our compassion as Christians. Web Team The opportunities available on the Internet make it imperative that we bridge the "digital divide," utilizing the available technology to communicate the love of God with all humanity. The opportunities available on the Internet make it imperative that we bridge the "digital divide," utilizing the available technology to communicate the love of God with all humanity. This creative, revolutionary step was undertaken in 1978 following the vision of Pastor David L. Gray. It's ultimate aim was to enhance the economic viability of African Americans. It caught the attention of the national media, as one of the first major initiatives of it's kind launched by a local congregation. Northeast Junior High School An ambitious effort launched in 1985 by Dr. David L. Gray and the Pleasant Green congregation, designed to preserve the historical, cultural and physical structure of the community institution. (Most of the blacks in the city attended this school before the period of forced integration.) Estimated to cost several million dollars, stretching over several years, it was to have a two-fold purpose: (1) house the PGCS as it expanded; and (2) house a museum, library, auditorium, gymnasium, vocational center, and many other educational opportunities for the entire community. In the immediate offing will be an expanded thrust to develop a consortium of concerned community persons (activists, local groups, government, churches, businesses, and foundations) to make this dream a reality for the needs of children and youth. Pleasant Green Baptist Church in Africa Inaugurated in 1982, this congregation represents an indigenous center for worship of the Lord Jesus Christ in the "motherland." Pastor Gray was sensitive to the need for such a witness. He led the church family in becoming a sponsoring fellowship of this new international ministry, under the leadership of Reverend Nathaniel Nebenu. Through its mission funds, Pleasant Green has provided consistent financial and emotional support for the pastor, workers, construction of a church, along with a maternity clinic. "Praise in the Park" During the summer, we sense the need to make a major evangelistic impact in our community, by taking the Gospel of Jesus Christ directly to the community. In short, on a Sunday morning we close the doors of the sanctuary, moving our worship to the outdoors of the park, under a tent. Many have come to Christ through this outreach. Youth Sensitive to the real pressures and allures affecting youth, we have developed meaningful ministry opportunities for youth: Bible study classes, Choir, Ushers, Jesus Steppers Drill Team, Mentor Program, Investment Training, College Preparation, Spiritual Lock-ins, Arts & Drama and Youth Deacons. Internal Design Fine Arts Ministry A drama ministry designed to reach out to bring in untapped talents, seasoned talents; putting on productions as an outreach through our community to bring in souls for Jesus Christ. |
